This very large picture (100cm x 120cm x 4cm)of a girl on a purple phone uses over 3000 British postage stamps-mainly Arnold Machin designs from 1971 and the old fashioned (pre- digital) ones on the purple phone. The stamps and ink bring depth and texture, making the figure’s expression vibrant and immediate. Having used several of Lichtenstein’s Pop Art women for a variety of projects, I needed to create Ben-Day dots. Lichtenstein used the industrial method of silk screen printing, but not having that facility I purchased pieces of zinc plate with different size holes which I used to hand produce ‘dots’ with a set of permanent ink pens. The finished work radiates a powerful, nostalgic vibe that will electrify any space, inviting viewers to feel a tension and intimacy from within her expression.
