Nelson Mandela celebrated his 90th birthday on July 18th 2008. A former President of South Africa, he was the first to be elected in fully democratic elections. Before his presidency, Mandela was an anti- apartheid activist and spent 27 years in prison (prisoner 46664), much of it on Robben Island, on convictions for crimes committed while he led the struggle against apartheid. He has received many awards in his long life and is currently on the front line, fighting AIDS through his Children's Fund, supporting education and health care. He is much admired world wide and Pete has created the portrait in tribute to this great man.
