When Barack Obama took the oath of office in January 2009 he became America's 44th president - and the country's first African-American leader. His portrait was created in anticipation of this momentous event. Behind him is the flag, ‘The Stars and Stripes’ which is made up from American stamps; the Statue of Liberty - 32 cents giving a blue ‘ground’ for the stars with ‘Uncle Sam’s Hat’ supplying the white stripes. These have been designed with gentle rippled undulations suggestive of the wind of change that will affect all of the States of America under Obama. His tie used first class stamps depicting the White House’ around the neck’ for at least one term of office as he looks across into the background towards a greener future.
